Lessons from Jose Altuve

“The best success is to

live your life the way

God wants you to.”

~ Jose Altuve

Make goals and do what it takes to achieve them.

Jose Altuve was born and raised in Maracay, Venezuela.  He began playing baseball when he was 8.  When he was 14, his dream was to play professional baseball.

Loyalty and contentment matter

Altuve has made it clear that he wants the Astros to be the team where he invests his time, talents, and abilities for his baseball career.

Be a team player.

Together the 2023 Astros accomplished:

* AL West Championship

* AL Division Series Championship

* 7th straight ALCS appearance

Make God 1st.

After hitting a home run, as Altuve crosses home plate, he stops, raises both hands and points up, and lifts his eyes upward to acknowledge God.  Only then does he accept the high fives, handshakes, back pats, and congratulations from his teammates.  Altuve’s family taught him that to be successful he needed to have God first in his life and to thank God for everything. That is what matters.

Quick to give credit and compliment teammates

After returning to the dugout, Altuve was seen heading straight to Jon Singleton to express how big it was for him to draw the walk before he (Altuve) hit the3-run homer that won Game 5 for the Astros.

Jose Altuve: “I know everybody is talking about the homer, but if you go and see Diaz’s base hit and Singleton walk, especially when he hasn’t played in a lot of days, and coming from the bench facing probably 1 of the best closers in the playoffs, I think the key was these two guys.”

Altuve on success

“I think God has blessed me only because I let him control everything that is around me.  Achieving success isn’t about getting into the major leagues or having the best season in the world.  The best success is to live your life the way God wants you to.”

May we, too, be quick to give God the glory, thank Him, live our lives the way He wants us to, and encourage others to do the same.

Not to us, Lord, not to us but to your name be the glory, because of your love and faithfulness.

Psalm 115:1

Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong. Do everything in love.

1 Corinthians 16:13-14

Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.

Romans 12:10
