Several years ago, in the "Spring Awards Recognition Program” for E-2, Brad’s Corps outfit at Texas A&M University, a reference was made to how a question had been answered by one of his Corps Buddies in an interview. When asked who he would most like to have dinner with, the 20 year old responded, “My great-grandson.” He further elaborated that he wanted to see how his legacy had been passed down through the generations. What thought provoking words from a young man.
That response reminded me of one of my favorite songs, “Find Us Faithful”, authored by Jon Mohr and sung by Steve Green, as well as other vocalists. The chorus of the song states:
“Find Us Faithful”
Chorus:
“Oh may all who come behind us find us faithful
May the fire of our devotion light their way
May the footprints that we leave
Lead them to believe
And the lives we live inspire them to obey
Oh may all who come behind us find us faithful”
May the fire of our devotion light their way
May the footprints that we leave
Lead them to believe
And the lives we live inspire them to obey
Oh may all who come behind us find us faithful”
Every day, we each have the opportunity to define our legacy by the choices we make: in the words we say, the thoughts we think, our actions and reactions in response to what is going on around us, by who and what we devote our time to, and most importantly by whom we choose to serve as our Lord and Savior. May the legacy we choose to pass on be one of God’s faithfulness to us and in response, our faith, trust, and obedience to Him.
Psalm 78:1-7
1 O my people, hear my teaching; listen to the words of my mouth.
2 I will open my mouth in parables,
I will utter hidden things, things from of old—
3 what we have heard and known,
what our fathers have told us.
4 We will not hide them from their children;
we will tell the next generation
the praiseworthy deeds of the LORD,
his power, and the wonders he has done.
5 He decreed statutes for Jacob
and established the law in Israel,
which he commanded our forefathers
to teach their children,
6 so the next generation would know them,
even the children yet to be born,
and they in turn would tell their children.
7 Then they would put their trust in God
and would not forget his deeds
but would keep his commands.
