Lightening the Load

Derlin Newey lives in Roy, Utah, and works as a delivery driver for Papa John’s Pizza.  At 89 years of age, Newey needs to work about 30 hours a week to supplement his retirement income.  Whenever he delivers a pizza, he greets the customer with, “Hello, are you looking for some pizza?”  Even though there are other pizza places in town, Carlos Valdez and his wife order from Papa John’s and ask for Derlin to deliver their pizza.

Recently, Valdez had an idea.  He had posted pictures of Newey and decided to see if people would like to gift him with money so he wouldn’t have to work so many hours each week.  The response surpassed his expectations.  On Tuesday morning, Valdez and his wife went to Newey’s home and gifted him with a little over $12,000.00 in cash to help lighten his load.  When interviewed by KSL, Valdez reported, “This couldn’t have gone any better.  He needed this.  I’m just glad we could help him.  We just need to treat people with kindness and respect the way he does.  He stole our hearts.”

Mitchell Couch of Lemoore, California, has been in the carpentry business for over 20 years.  During the pandemic, his kids set up their computers at the kitchen table.  “Their school work was always all over the table and we were constantly having to move it, so I built desks for my kids so they could have their own space.”  Couch told Fox News, “When I was building the second desk, I thought that others might benefit from knowing how to build their own desks.  I did a quick YouTube video and posted a few directions along with a materials list, hoping that it could help anybody out.”

The owners of the local supermarket found out about the tutorial and offered to purchase supplies if Couch would make more desks.  Since then, Couch has made 37 desks and more have been requested.  He makes the desks free of charge and distributes them to students in and around their school district.  Couch told reporter Janine Puhak, “Agriculture is huge in our area so we have a lot of farm workers and there are families that are in need.”  Since they are not sure of when schools will reopen in their area, Mitchell Couch is now in the process of making more desks. Couch concluded, “Sometimes we look at things on a national or worldwide level and it can bring us down.  When you focus [on those] around you, you can have the greatest impact by just helping and being charitable with your neighbors and friends.”

During these days, a little extra kindness is a gift, reminder, and invitation for recipients and spectators alike.  May we, too, be willing to do our part to find ways to help lighten the load for others.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

Galatians 5:22-23

It is a sin to despise one’s neighbor, but blessed is the one who is kind to the needy.

Proverbs 14:21

Whoever oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honors God.

Proverbs 14:31

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.

1 Corinthians 13:4

Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.
