Making an Impact

“SCRIPTURE COMES ALIVE

WHEN OUR LIVES

 ARE CONFORMED TO IT.”

~ Dustin Benge

In December, an 8th grade homeroom class sent a representative to take an angel off the “Giving Tree” at their school. On the angel were listed the wishes for a little girl:  clothes and a bicycle.  Knowing they wouldn’t have enough money to buy the bike, they decided for each person to give $2, so clothes could be purchased.  The last morning, before school, someone brought in a bicycle and left it in the front of the classroom.

Harold Gober is the plumbing teacher at Longview High School.  He recently offered free plumbing classes, on Saturday morning, for the adults in his community.

Dalton Brooks is a senior at Shiner High School.  He will be playing defense for Texas A&M in the Fall.  His older brother, Doug, plays football for Texas A&M Kingsville.  During their winter break, when they could have spent time with friends, they helped their dad coach his group of 12-year-old football guys.  Dalton and Doug called and taught plays, got the boys hyped up, and encouraged them.  They called the boys by name.  Dana Burnett Nichols’ son, Colby, is on the team.  She stated, “They have no idea how much they are impacting these 12-year-old boys.  And when the tournament was over and it didn’t go as we hoped – they phoned a friend who is also from Shiner and a college football player – to come to practice and work with the boys.”

Lilly’s 5 year old son asked to take an extra pair of gloves and hat to school.  She asked him if he needed them in case the others got wet.  He replied, “There’s a boy in my class who never has any and I want him to be warm.”

Bonnie Engle, 90 years old, is a resident of Desert Sage Manor in Hermiston, Oregon.  The police department in her city has an annual Christmas Express that provides food, supplies, and other items during the holidays.  Twenty years ago, Bonnie started making quilts for the police to give to people in their city.  To date, she has made over 2,000 quilts.  This year, she made 100+ quilts.  Bonnie expressed, “It feels good to do something for them.  Thank you to the community for the donations of the fabric, that’s really something that’s very important.”  What a wonderful and worthwhile project for Bonnie to work on all year long.

May we also act upon the opportunities given, in order to make a difference and impact.
