Active Caring

“If you want to know someone’s mind,

listen to their words.

If you want to know their heart,

watch their actions.”

On 19th Street at Ocean City, a set of plastic buckets, shovels, rakes, and spoons were gathered and left on a ledge.  A sign with ‘Enjoy” was placed in the handle of one of the buckets.  That free gift will hopefully add to the pleasure of another family’s visit to the beach.

Shirley Perrin has three apple trees that are producing an abundant crop this year.  Every morning she picks up apples and places them in plastic bags.  She makes sure there are enough apples in each bag to make a pie.  Shirley then hangs the bags on the chain link fence for anyone to take who would like to have fresh homegrown apples.  She says people are smiling and grateful when they take them which makes her happy.

Alyssa is sixteen years old.  For the past five years, she has made hats for the homeless in her city.  This year, Alyssa has already knitted and donated 105 hats to the local center.

While waiting for his family to finish eating lunch at Chick-fil-A, a boy spent 10 minutes opening the door for people and wishing them a great day.  Kudos to the parents for encouraging the polite, thoughtful, and helpful behavior.

Goldie’s Bagels, in Columbia, Missouri, has a sign in their window which reads, “WHOEVER NEEDS, COME AND EAT.”  The message on the board clarifies that if a person is without money, or in need, to ask that the order be placed on the Neighbors Account.  That way their coffee and bagel are free.  There is also a way for other members of the community to contribute funds to help reimburse the Neighbors Account.

So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.

Matthew 7:12

Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.

James 1:22
