Michael Brantley, a 14-year veteran, hasn’t played in a game, since June 26, 2022, due to an injury. Players credit his locker room speech, after the 7-0 loss of Game 3, in Philadelphia, to be a turning point for the team. Astros rookie David Hensley said, “He told us that we needed to keep believing, to keep playing the way we can play. To keep going. He told us to forget about worrying about losing. To just keep playing our game.” “That guy’s a legend in this clubhouse for a reason. We call him Uncle Mike because of stuff like this.” Kyle Tucker added, “He does a lot behind the scenes for everyone.” Lance McCullers Jr. replied, “Michael Brantley really got everyone refocused after Game 3. The talk he gave meant a lot.” Tucker said, “He told us it’s just not over. That we’ve got to keep our foot on the gas and keep going. It doesn’t matter if we’re up or down, we got to keep pushing and putting together good at-bats. Together. As we can.” Brantley had not planned to speak, but “I saw us kind of down. And I wanted to remind each and every one of my teammates how special this team is. And that we’re not letting this one slip away. This is ours. We’ve just got to go and get it.”

Game 5: November 3, 2022 Astros 3 Phillies 2
* Justin Verlander pitched 5 innings and earned his first pitching win in a World Series game.
* Bottom of 9th, Chas McCormick, Center Fielder, ran about 3o yards to base of the back wall, jumped up and turned wrist to catch the ball, slammed into scoreboard, bounced off wall, fell back on track, held right hand up with ball safely tucked inside the glove.
Game 6: November 5, 2022 Phillies 1 Astros 4
* Mattress Mack threw out the first pitch.
* In the sixth inning, Yordan Alvarez hit the go-ahead three-run homer.
* Alex Bregman played with a broken left index finger, after trying to stretch a single into a double and sliding into second base in the 6th inning.
* Catcher Martin Maldonado played throughout the second half with a broken hand because he knew the pitchers needed him
* For the final out, and to clinch the World Series, Kyle Tucker ran in from right field to catch a pop fly, off the bat of Nick Castellanos, that came down in foul territory.
* Dusty Baker won his first World Series Championship at age 73, the oldest manager. He won as a player with the Dodgers in 1981. After winning, the club’s coaches and support staff surrounded Dusty Baker to congratulate him before joining the players on the field.
Baker reminisced, “Had this happened years ago, I might not even be here. So maybe it wasn’t supposed to happen so that I could hopefully influence a few young men’s lives and their families and a number of people in the country through showing what perseverance and character can do for you in the long run.”
Lessons observed:
* Even if you are injured, and unable to play, you can contribute to the encouragement, work, and morale of your teammates.
* No one player wins the game alone. Teamwork matters.
* When you care for your teammates/coaches/personnel, want others to succeed and reach their goals, build each other up, and go to bat for each other, you become family.
* It’s beneficial to cheer for and encourage your team.
* Extra effort can make the difference between a win or loss.
* If at first you don’t succeed, try again.
* Listen to advice.
* Don’t underestimate the contributions of Rookies.
* Perseverance and character make a difference.
* Be quick to honor and thank those who help you achieve.
* When you play to win for your owner, manager, coaches, staff, teammates, and fans, many join you in celebrating.
* Fan behavior is important at home and away.
* Do your best.
* Never give up.
Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.
