The Helpers Came

When Fred Rogers was young and saw scary things on the news, his mother would say, “Look for the helpers.  You will always find people who are helping.”  He continued, “To this day, especially in times of disaster, I remember my mother’s words, and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers – so many caring people in this world.”

And the helpers came:

* People, with generators or electricity, running extension cords to help neighbors keep their freezer and refrigerator running

* Children, teenagers, and adults working together to help clean up sticks, limbs, trees, broken fences, and debris

* People checking on family, friends, and neighbors

* Trucks and linemen, from different parts of Texas and other states, helping repair lines and restore energy

* Police directing traffic, due to lights not working, trees and lines down, broken glass, and other hazards

* People picking up groceries, supplies, and medicine for those who can’t get out to do it

* Families offering their homes for people to cool off and stay

* People charging phones in their home or car, for those who need it

* Volunteers providing ice, water, coffee, snacks, and meals to neighbors and workers

* People taking their chain saws and other equipment to help where needed

* Texas Baptist Men continuing to help with the repair and cleanup process, both inside and outside of houses

* Chick-fil-A, Ciro’s, Subway, and other places taking food to the linemen

* Spring Baptist Church sending their Disaster Relief team to help

* Another church hosting a wedding because our church was without electricity

* Churches and organizations offering assistance

Disaster or not, may we all look for opportunities to do good works and be helpers.

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Ephesians 2:10
