The Gift of Presence

“Your presence matters.  You matter.  But you have to prepare to be present.  It doesn’t just happen.  Being present requires focus.  Presence comes when you say no to the expectations of a full schedule.  Presence for others comes when they get your full attention.  Presence matters.  YOUR presence matters.  People need YOUR presence today.”               Logan Gentry

Teri Tidmore is halfway through her 30 days of radiation treatments at MD Anderson.  Each day, friends take turns driving Teri to and from the hospital and spending valuable time caring for her.  And each day Teri looks for and posts things she is grateful for.

Clayton Bullion works with the Baptist Student Ministries across the state of Texas.  Thus, he understands the powerful influence of investing in young people.  Recently, he walked into a Panera bread in Dallas.  He noticed two college guys sitting with two older men.  They were reading and studying the Bible.  Clayton left a challenge.

“Old people: students want to hear from you.  Not about your politics, your view on the state of their generation or our nation.  They want to hear about your walk with Jesus.  You’ll also find that they have zeal and a passion that will refresh your soul.

Young adults: they are a generation that loves you and prays for you.  They’ve been walking with Jesus longer than you’ve been alive.  They have a wisdom and steadiness that will be an anchor for you as you navigate your 2os.  They’ll probably pay for breakfast too!”

Allison Bellomy and Willa Faye Mason have been in a Bible Study together for over a year.  The study takes place over the phone.  On Tuesday, Allison dropped by and visited with Ms. Faye in person.  With four children, a job, and busy schedule, Faye thought that Allison might not have taken time for lunch.  Even though she is in her nineties, Faye drove and picked up a pizza for lunch.  Allison spent the afternoon visiting with her friend.  She learned about Faye’s college days, love of sports, teaching experiences, and traveling as one of the Women’s Red Heads Basketball players.  This amazing woman wanted to make sure Allison knew that she is “so thankful to God that he guided her and taught her so much, giving Him all the praise for the wonderful life she has had.”  Both Ms. Faye and Allison were both blessed by the gift of presence.

In this busy season, the gift of time and presence may be the most valuable present we can give.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.  Galatians 5:22-23

Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.  Colossians 3:12
